What a Diagnostic Scan Actually Does
A diagnostic scan plugs a tool straight into your car's onboard computer port and reads every system at once. Engine, transmission, ABS, airbags, emissions, and the electrical network. In a few minutes we pull a full report of every fault the car has logged, not just the one that lit up the dash.
We use OEM-level scan tools, not a fifty-dollar code reader from a parts counter. The cheaper readers only see basic emissions codes and miss the manufacturer-specific data that tells the real story. Our equipment talks to every module in the car the way the dealer's tool does.
Once we have the data, a licensed mechanic reads it. We check live sensor values, test the circuit, and confirm what is actually wrong before anyone picks up a wrench. You leave with a real report, not a guess.
Common Check Engine Codes
Some codes show up again and again on West Island cars. A loose or failing gas cap triggers an evaporative leak code and is the cheapest fix on the planet. Oxygen sensor codes mean the engine computer is not getting the right fuel-mixture data, which hurts fuel economy and can fail an emissions test.
Misfire codes point to a spark plug, coil, or fuel injector that has stopped firing on one cylinder. Left alone, a misfire can damage the catalytic converter and turn a small repair into a big one. Mass airflow sensor codes often mean a dirty or failing sensor that makes the car run rough and stall at idle.
None of these codes tell you which part to buy. They tell you which system flagged a problem. That is why a code is the start of the diagnosis, not the end of it.
Why a Code Isn't a Diagnosis
A free code read at a parts store tells you which circuit reported a fault, not which part actually failed. The same code can come from a bad sensor, a broken wire, a vacuum leak, or a failing module. Swapping the part the code names is how people end up replacing sensors and coils they never needed.
A real diagnosis closes that gap. We read the code, then test the circuit it points to, check the live data, and find the actual cause. Sometimes the fix is a fifty-cent vacuum hose. Sometimes it is a sensor. You only find out by testing, not by guessing.
That is the difference between a code read and a diagnosis. You pay once to find the real problem, instead of paying three times to swap parts until the light goes off.
